Label TextIn Untitled, metal wiring creates a cage-like organic shape that binds and encloses smaller forms within a larger composition. Examine the sculpture closely: the negative space between the wires creates volume. Ruth Asawa’s affinity for art grew out of her experiences of being marginalized and imprisoned. Like many other Japanese-Americans during World War II, Asawa was interned at Roher Relocation Center in Desha County, Arkansas. The wire used in Untitled evokes fencing materials surrounding internment camps.
