Label TextHenry Kirke Brown aimed to adapt the artistic legacy of Europe to an American form. Although Brown traveled to Mackinac Island, Michigan, to sketch and observe Native people for source material, he relied more on classical models as the basis for this figure. In its pose, The Choosing of the Arrow resembles ancient Greek and Roman sculptures of athletic youths, which Brown would have seen during his four-year stay in Italy.
