Label Text“There is no simpler way to divide a canvas than with straight lines, at equal intervals. This enables the viewer to forget the structure, and see the color itself.”
--Gene Davis

Davis’s monumental Black Balloon extends from one edge of the canvas to the other, leaving no empty space to rest the eyes. This hypnotic sequence of vertical bands, reminiscent of retail barcodes and old-time television test patterns, makes two important statements: a color’s vibrancy depends on the colors around it, and stripes are as valid and vital a subject for painting as flowers or fruit.
